Shopping MQ Logo Souvenirs

Shopping MQ Logo Souvenirs

When I first walked on campus, I have found that many seniors sister wearing uniforms with the MQ logo which impressed me. In our country, students are no uniforms, many students do not like to wear uniforms but like to wear their own fashion. I think with MQ logo is a sense of belonging, this is a good way to improve awareness and also increase the sense of identity of MQ. These makes students feel that they belong to the university, but also think it is an honor. Then I found this shop on campus, there are a wide range of printed MQ logo items which are really interesting, such as notebooks, mugs, mobile phone shell, watches, etc.

The perfect item of clothing to keep you warm during the cooler months and represent your time at Macquarie Uni. I bought the black one with my friends.

I do really love this mug, it is simple and function, also in different color to choose. I saw many friends and staff using this one, this help the environment and take your hot beverage with you in an official Macquarie University Memorabilia Keep Cup.

"Get organised, celebrate your graduation or capture your time here at Macquarie Uni with this official memorabilia clock. "

Now all the logo item is 15% off which is good to buy like logo phone cases...

Electives At Macquarie

Hey,

In this post Experience MQ will talk about some great electives to choose that can complement your degree, or give you different perspectives on a new topic.

Different degrees have different structures so the amount of electives a students can choose varies across faculties and degrees. All Macquarie undergraduate degrees mandate that a People and Planet unit is undertaken and passed. These are units that are either outside your faculty or outside your department of study, they vary from session to session so if you have one in mind check to see if it is offered in the coming session. These units focus on either people or the planet and allow MQ students to broaden their areas of study and look beyond what their degree offers. This program is exclusive to Macquarie and sets it apart from other universities.

Apart from People/Planet units, degrees let students pick general electives which can be chosen when the degree studied has core units that do not equal the minimum requirement for graduation, but this is normal because the vast majority of degrees allow for at least one elective outside the People/Planet requirement. These electives could be extra courses that are in your department or completely different from your area of study.

An elective that I like is MHIS (Modern History) 101, Screening the Past: History on Film and Television. This unit examines how historical film and historical television shows portray history and impact the way history is perceived in the public eye. Each week a historical film is shown to the class, there is a lecture and tutorial on the film focusing on how it portrayed the historical  events and affected the public perception. Another critical part to this unit is what people like reviewers and academics thought about the film. Some of the films studied in this session include: Gallipoli, Elizabeth, Amazing Grace and Mad Men.

MHIS 101 is an interesting unit and provides a great change if your area of study can get a bit dry sometimes. Now you can justify watching movies during study time, just say it is for MHIS 101!

A perfect Planet unit for anyone (expect E-Business degrees) is ISYS 100, IT and Society. This is the unit that all the Experience MQ bloggers met in. This unit examines how information and technology has changed the way people communicate and interact with each other. If you are wanting to learn more about IT and computing this unit is perfect. The current lecturer Matt is very funny and makes all the content interesting and engaging.

The transition to university can be tough, especially with the different requirements in essay writing and comprehension which is why Macquarie created Academic Communication (AC) subjects. AC is offered in the Business, Human Sciences and Science faculties and will help new students understand the academic practices and writings in their associated faculty. You can check them out here http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/2014/Units/UGByDepartment/Department+of+Linguistics.

To get a list of units that Macquarie offers check out this link http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/2014/Units/UGByCode.

There are so many different electives to choose from, but make sure you check the requirements of your degree and the unit yourself to make sure your eligible and check what level it is so that it fits in with your pattern of study.

My First Time Experiences at MQ

I chose to study at MQ purely based on wanting to study a Bachelor of e-Business and being able to get to university in just 10min by car.  Before I came to MQ, I was nervous and scared. Other than knowing what degree I would be taking, I knew nothing about the university. It was orientation week and my cold had taken over my body so I couldn’t physically visit the campus. I focused more on becoming well than learning about where everything was in the campus. I fretted over a lot of things from connecting with people to finding lecture theatres and rooms. It was actually more mentally exhausting before I familiarised myself with MQ in the first few weeks.

The People

The people of MQ stood out to me. I was impressed by how comfortable the social environment was at MQ. The first person I met at MQ was a lovely by passer who didn’t only give me directions to the lake at MQ but walked me over to it while having a nice chat with me. Therefore, if you ever find yourself lost at MQ, I’m sure students, who don’t look busy, will happily help you find your way around if you take the courage to ask. I could also relax and enjoy my first classes at MQ because lecturers, tutors and fellow students were easy-going and approachable. I could see that even though a few of my lecturers and tutors were tired at times, they took their jobs seriously and gave their best effort to teach and help us. I even find some lectures entertaining. I was utterly relieved when fellow classmates I smiled at returned it and it was not as difficult as I thought it would be to start a conversation with someone.

The Place

When I had to walk all the way from the front entrance of MQ to building W6D on the other side of the campus for my first 8am tutorial on Friday, the campus seemed like its own little unique suburb. I could stroll slowly through the campus area because I felt safe. I remember when I was studying at UTS, I was afraid to walk through the busy streets in the city to get from one building to the other. The rush of people and cars in the city made me stop for nothing.

I already knew a few faces at MQ before attending the place myself so during my break between classes I met up with friends for lunch. It was very easy for me to find food which I liked at the Campus Hub because there were a variety of food choices available. I thought it would be impossible for me to find food I would eat because I’m what you would call “picky”. I love fresh and healthy wholefoods and I was stoked to see that there was an Iku Wholefoods at MQ! It has become my go-to store for lunch or a snack when I’m at MQ and don’t have anything packed.

I enjoyed my lunch for the first time at the Student Hub. The lower ground floor of the Hub is a space where students gather with their friends. I remember that there was so much life in the room because there were a lot of people there laughing and chattering away on the couches. There were people playing table tennis and hip hop dancers feeling the music. I couldn’t stop the urge to dance because the music was too catchy. I was also impressed by how the Hub had a kitchen bench and multiple microwaves for public use.

Above: Low quality photographs (sorry) of the lower ground floor in the Student Hub(It was empty because it was morning when I took these.)

These were just a few of the memorable experiences I had at MQ in my first few weeks of being here. I hope to build many more memories here at MQ in the coming years.

Till next time,

Joyce

Introductory Post

Introduction to Experience MQ

Welcome to Experience MQ, we are here to give you the inside scoop on life at Macquarie University from an undergraduate student perspective. Our bloggers are Diandra, Charmaine, Crystal, Chelsea and Joyce.

Here is a photo of us in one of the fabulous computing labs at the university. From left to right: Crystal, Chelsea, Charmaine, Joyce and Diandra.

Our Profiles

Diandra does an Arts degree majoring in Politics and International relations and loves how the university has a relaxing vibe and great study spaces.
Charmaine does Professional Accounting and loves how Macquarie has lots of open spaces and one central location.
Crystal is an International Student from China also doing Professional accounting and is enjoying the change that an Australian university has brought her.
Chelsea who is also from China and doing Professional accounting enjoys that Macquarie has many options for studying and a great range of electives.
Joyce is doing e-Business and likes the student culture at Macquarie as she is new to the university.

University Background

Macquarie University was established in 1964 as a university for the expanding region of Northern Sydney as there was increasing demand for university education at the time. The university was first opened to students in March 1967 and added the Graduate School of Management (MGSM) in 1969. It has seen significant growth in students and changes in curriculum in its 50 years, and it remains one of the top universities in Sydney and Australia. Check out their website www.mq.edu.au.

MQ Fun Fact

Comedians Adam Hills and Chris Lilley and three founding members of children’s band The Wiggles (Murray, Anthony and Greg) are all alumni of Macquarie University.

Diandra’s Inside Info

Attending university is a big step and a massive change especially if you are coming from another country or from high school. To help with the transition my suggestion is to join some clubs you think you might be interested in there are many, here are a few types; culture and language clubs, sporting groups and degree related associations.
Joining gives you the chance to meet like-minded people and make some friends and do some activities. Some clubs even have introductory social events, like harbour cruises. A benefit of joining is that you can meet students who are further along in their degrees and they can give you advice, sell textbooks to you and help you network to find a job once you finish. To check out some of the societies and clubs at the uni go to http://www.mq.edu.au/on_campus/get_involved/student_groups/.

My final tip is download the Lost on Campus app to help you find classes, sell textbooks and get tutoring. It is a big help when you are looking for buildings and classrooms in your first couple of weeks.

Storyboard/Layout

We decided on this layout for the blog because it has the right balance of gadgets and isn't too crowded. We think this will appeal to the viewer because it gives them two options to subscribe and allows international viewers to translate the page into their own language.
